Hey Youth, join a small group today! We have been praying about this for some time now. We are gearing up for what will be an exciting, challenging, and awesome experience in the iAM Youth Ministry and at David Chapel!
Small Group Bible Study will begin the week of Sunday, June 19, 2016 – Saturday, June 25, 2016.
The Great Commission: We are called to disciple youth who make disciples who make disciples- Matt 28:19 (NIV).
According to Dr. Richard Ross, professor of Student Ministry at Southwestern Seminary, there are four components of disciple making: 1) corporate worship is powerful in the transformation of teenagers; 2) faith conversations at home & commitment to teenager’s spiritual development, 3) open groups, and 4) covenant groups. Our small group bible study will focus primarily on component 4 and we hope will inspire more of component 2.
- Rather than open and fluid participation in open groups, youth join a covenant group only by making a covenant with the others being discipled for a specific period of time (1 Thess 2:8) and built around deeper concepts and spiritual disciplines (Heb 5:12).
- Rather than most study being done during the meeting times of open groups, youth in covenant groups usually are accountable for preparation and spiritual disciplines outside of meeting times.
Our Goals: A) youth who love and adore King Jesus, and B) youth who sacrificially and courageously love others and make disciples of all people- peers of our youth and the unchurched.
The Structure:
- Each Small Group, or Covenant Group, will consist of 3 to 8 Youth and 1 to 2 Young Adult or Adult facilitators.
- Each Covenant Group will meet consistently- bi-weekly at same time unless agreed otherwise, and conveniently- at approved locations within a respective geographic region of the Covenant Group.
- Each Youth and Facilitator would be required to study their lessons and do any homework prior to Bible Study days.
- Sessions are structured based on a 1- hour time schedule and outlined within the curriculum.
- Each Youth and Facilitator is asked to make a 1 year commitment to their Covenant Group- beginning June 2016 to June 2017. We will have quarterly, Youth-led social events throughout the period as well as necessary breaks!
- Our curriculum, Making Disciples, was written and published by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary for free and was published on January 4, 2016. We will identify specific lessons in which the Small Groups will cover each quarter.
